Throwing a Virtual Birthday Party

Well, I definitely did not think this would be something I’d be writing about, but here we are. It was my sister’s birthday yesterday and even though we’re all practicing social distancing, we could not not celebrate her birthday.

That’s when Joey and I decided to throw her a little virtual birthday party. We ordered and had this paint and canvas set delivered to everyone who was going to be participating. It’s a $40 kit that comes with 3 canvases, 2 sets of paint brushes, and all the necessary paint- so it made it pretty easy to make sure everyone had what they’d need.

We chose a painting tutorial on YouTube (there are thousands) and then once everyone was on our Zoom call, as hosts, we shared our computer screen with the tutorial playing so that everyone had the same thing on their screens.  It was a lot of fun to see everyone following along, from a distance. At the end, when everyone was finished, one by one we held up our paintings so we could see how everybody’s turned out.

I have to admit, it was pretty hard not being able to hug my sister for her birthday, but we had a great time laughing and painting together. And then of course, we had to sing her Happy Birthday to top off our little virtual party.

If you know someone and are missing out on celebrating a special moment with them during this time, doing an activity together virtually is definitely something I’d recommend. That way the day holds at least something a little extra special for the person. I definitely did not want my sister’s birthday to be just another day in Quarantine and this was a fun way to mix it up a bit.

I don’t have pictures of everyones, but here’s a photo of mine and Joey’s, and then peep down below for how my mom and dad’s turned out (they did a little improv on their part).

  1. Wow, what a fun & creative idea! I saw a lot of virtual parties happening but this is the first one with painting kits. I love it! Happy belated birthday to your beautiful sis! ♡
