Cave-ing in Dana Point

Joey got back from traveling with his team this weekend, just in time for a Sunday Funday little outing! I had heard about these “secret caves” in Dana Point and was dying for a chance to get back near the water to explore.

FYI, Joey is a total trooper. He got back at 5 am this morning, slept for two hours and got up and ready to go with me at 8 am. Neither of us had ever been to Dana Point and I honestly can’t wait to go back and explore more of the city. It’s absolutely beautiful and FULL of things to do. You can rent see-doos, paddle boards, buy tickets to ride on a sail boat, hang out on the boardwalk, relax on the beach, explore tide pools, and hike to the secret caves! We had afternoon plans so only had time to get to the caves but we will be back for sure!

The mini “hike” to the caves is part dirt trail and part jumping from rock to rock hoping they’re all solidly in place so you don’t fall flat on your face 🙂

The walk to the biggest cave is about a mile from the start of the beach. The easiest way to get to the caves is to park behind the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. You’ll see a big pirate ship docked in the bay right outside the parking lot! And parking is free! Once you’re parked, just walk straight behind the Ocean Institute and you’ll see a green caged staircase. Take the staircase down to the beach and walk to the right, till you run into the ocean and the cave will just be to the right of that point!

It was the perfect Sunday spent exploring! If anyone can get out to Dana Point I definitely suggest it!

  2. What a great way to spend a Sunday! We love to hike and explore, especially the West coast. The beaches there are so much more scenic than our East coast beaches. I can’t wait to go back. Your pictures are awesome too. Thanks for letting us join your adventure!
    Safe & Happy travels,
