On stories this weekend, I posted a little after-run selfie and to my surprise got a few questions/remarks about it. Mainly a few people saying they weren’t aware I ran, which came as a huge surprise to me.
I’ve run my entire life. I started track & field at I believe 7 or 8 years old and ever since, some form of running has been a part of my life. In high school I joined the cross country team and that’s where my love for running really grew. That’s where I was first introduced to the idea of just running long distances out in the open and not just around a circular track. My dad has always been a runner and I did grow up watching him leave to go for a run with our dog, and I believe that’s where the seed was first planted for sure.
Now, running is a big release for me. It’s a time for me to just zone out and focus on solely me, one step at a time. I run on average twice a week, sometimes if I can squeeze in another run, I will but with my husband working 4 out of 7 of the days of the week, time is definitely a factor, but my schedule allows for at least two good, long runs a week. I don’t run for distance but rather aim for 30 minutes no matter what and if I’m feeling more on any given day, I’ll run longer. I generally don’t run for over 75 min at a time though (I typically don’t have that luxurious amount of time lol).
Ever since graduating college and collegiate soccer not being in control of my life, I’ve leaned into running more and more- some people have asked if I’ve done marathons and/or would do one. And the answer for me is no, not that I have anything against them and I’ve definitely expressed interest in doing it with friends or my dad if the opportunity came for sure. But the biggest turn off for me is that I just don’t want to spend $$ to sign up to run a distance that I do on a regular day of the week, the girl math in me says that if I don’t, that $$ can better be spent on Disney merch on our next Disney trip 😉
I have however done a Color Run and that was so much fun! Something like that I feel is more worth it because it’s an experience and something exciting at each mile/checkpoint you hit.
Another little fun fact- I don’t run with music. I actually hate it. It tends to distract me from listening to my own breathing and distracts from feeling the natural pace that my body wants to be at. After all, I do see running as a release and not some additional stress on my body. I will listen to a podcast every once in a while, but mainly I like the silence.
On the other 3-4 days of the week where I’m not running, I lift weights. We have a home gym in our garage and after I put the kids down at night, I’ll go down and do a workout before ending my day. My husband will do a workout during the day while the kids are at school and while I’m at work and he writes down his workout on a whiteboard and I’ll repeat it that night (he works nights, so 4 out of 7 of the days of the week we have opposite lives lol).
Disclaimer if any of my former teammates are reading this- I do NOT lift heavy weights- I vowed after college soccer to never lift like that every again lol. Now its more about tone and just feeling strong for me, which I’m happy with.
I’ve been dying to try a reformer class out here but my schedule doesn’t really agree with any of the available class times and our weekends are strictly for family and now our kids’ sports obligations. So we’ll see if I ever get to one!
Have you tried a reformer class? Have any thoughts?
Happy Tuesday friends!
