So listen, I’ve read the reviews, I’ve seen all the things circling around social media, I am definitely aware of how the lead actress is a bit much and has for sure torpedo’d this whole film from the very beginning when she started press for it years and years ago. I actually wrote a post in 2023 dedicated to the drama surrounding the film and from my understanding, at the time it wasn’t even done being filmed yet– if you want to catch up, here’s my post from back then!
After having officially seen the film, I will say, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. My 4 year old daughter LOVED it, and really, that’s who it’s for. So all the Disney adults, and adults in general hating, boycotting, talking shit, etc etc etc, it really means nothing. Unless you’re a young girl leaving the movie hating it, I don’t think your review really means anything. Me, sitting there, as a 30 something year old woman, am not the target audience. The target audiences are these little girls who are going to the movie dressed up as Snow White (like Avery did), so if they like the movie, that’s the bottom line.
Having said that, I actually did like it. I felt like it was very cute and the way the live action expanded on the original story was entertaining even to me. You can hate on her all you want, but Rachel Zegler can sing, and her voice as Snow White is magical.
My biggest critique of the film is actually Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. I actually thought she did terrible, she wasn’t scary (in the slightest, not even close to the cartoon), and her scenes all felt very fake to me? *SPOILER ALERT*, they gave her two “villian” songs in the film and you can tell the woman was not meant to be a singer. So for me, they really failed at casting and writing for one of the most iconic villains in the Disney catalog.
While they removed the Prince from the plot, they did not remove the love story aspect in its entirety and I thought they had a creative way of filling that void that still fit within the “Snow White world.”
All in all, I think the movie is good and think all the bad reviews and lack of audience attendance is really more about boycotting the personal lives (personal statements, political views, etc) of the cast rather than their actual work on the film. And for me, our OG princess just deserves better!
I’m sure little Ms. Zegler wishes she could go back in time and take a step back way back when instead of running her mouth and saying some of the outlandish things she said, because I really think that’s whats keeping a lot of viewers who would’ve been happy to see this film, from ultimately seeing it.
And in my opinion, it’s actually pretty good! I think it might end up in my top 5 for live action films. Nothing will top The Little Mermaid or Beauty and The Beast live actions though!
Well, have you seen the film? What did you think?
