Alright, so if you haven’t heard about the controversy surrounding Disney’s latest live action adaptation of Snow White- definitely skip this post, it probably won’t make much sense. Or google the drama and get caught up before continuing to read.
The movie’s leading actress has definitely stirred up a lot of controversy and has a lot of Disney fans (especially fans of the OG film) pretty upset.
I was recently asked if I had any input or opinions on what was all going down and I do have some. The OG film was never one of my favorites so I feel like my opinions on the matter are unbiased. But really the bottom line is, these people are actors and are hired to do a job, and until the actual movie is out for everyone to see, I’m not sure anyone can fairly critique anything either way.
I don’t care that she’s latina and not white, just like I didn’t care that Halle Bailey was playing the little mermaid, if they do a beautiful job and play the part well, that’s all that matters to me.
The part that really errks me out, is some of the comments the actress portraying Snow White has made about the film. I saw an interview where she said a few things that I felt was disrespectful to the OG film. One- she called the prince a stalker- I haven’t recently watched the original movie, but I can’t remember ever thinking that the prince was a stalker? So that was (I felt) a weird thing to say, especially realizing that this princess was literally the princess that started it all as far as princesses go for Disney.
In the same interview, she also said the film wasn’t about the love story at all and that the prince’s scenes could be cut out. And while I’m all for girl power and all that- one of the main points of the movie is about a princess waiting for her prince to come (queue the music). Literally one of the most iconic songs from the movie is “Someday My Prince Will Come.” So if you’re that intent on making all these changes, why not just make an entirely different movie?
Really, my main issue with everything she’s repeatedly said is that it kinda seems like she’s trashing the original movie every chance she gets, so if you hate the movie so much, why would you agree to be the lead in it’s live action version? I just can’t really wrap my head around that part of it I guess.
Also- call me crazy, but I’m a little over all the anti-love story, anti-prince saving the day narratives that are constantly being sold. I feel like we can watch and make those films while also simultaneously making the romantic love stories that (at least) I grew up with? I don’t think it’s wrong to portray a princess wanting to be saved by the prince. I don’t think it’s wrong to portray a female character who dreams of the day she gets married and gets to have a family. I don’t think it’s bad to have a woman character who wants to be home and raise her family. I don’t think wanting those things makes a woman any less strong or powerful in her own right.
I grew up idolizing the Disney princesses and dreaming of the day I’d meet my Prince Charming (which I did) and I don’t think I’m any less of a feminist or strong woman just because I like the fact that I found a partner who could take care of me? If it came down to it- say I was in the middle of some fictional epic battle scene, I’d way rather he save the day and save me than me have to do it?
I guess we’ll all find out what the movie is really about next year when it finally hits theaters, if anything, all this controversy has certainly got people’s attention, whether it brings people to see the film or not is another story.
Have you heard any of the drama? What are your thoughts on the matter?

I heard there was some drama, but I didn’t know the situation until you brought up. These Disney Adults are freaking out way too much. There are things worth critiquing about that company like racism, cultural appropriation, abusing intellectual properties, etc, but this is getting ridiculous. I haven’t heard the “prince is a stalker” talking points, but I am aware of how problematic the “true love’s kiss” is when Snow White is unconscious when that happens and this could also apply to Sleeping Beauty after the fact. The Latina casting shows how bigoted Disney fans can be much like the Halle Bailey situation was.

[…] So listen, I’ve read the reviews, I’ve seen all the things circling around social media, I am definitely aware of how the lead actress is a bit much and has for sure torpedo’d this whole film from the very beginning when she started press for it years and years ago. I actually wrote a post in 2023 dedicated to the drama surrounding the film and from my understanding, at the time it wasn’t even done being filmed yet– if you want to catch up, here’s my post from back then!
